CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

As soon as Stuart drove them close enough to the park entrance for her to get a signal, Alexa called the Bullhead City police department. The officer who answered put her through to his chief.

“Hello, Chief Gregors, this is Deputy U.S. Marshal Chase. I was wondering if you could tell me about that hunter you detained a couple of days ago on suspicion of being the escaped prisoner Robby Tyson?”

“Now wait a minute, Deputy Marshal,” Chief Gregor snapped without bothering to say hello, “The media twisted that whole story into a pretzel. We did not detain that man on suspicion of being an escaped prisoner. We arrested him on suspicious behavior and suspicion of illegal hunting at night.”

Alexa remembered the Bullhead City cop standing on top of his car joyfully shouting, “We got him! We got him!” She decided not to mention that.

“Could you tell me more about the suspect and what led you to detain him?”

“Gladly. I want to set the record straight. We never, I repeat never, thought that man was Robby Tyson.”

“I never thought you did, sir,” Alexa replied, rolling her eyes.

“Good. Now the suspect’s name is Keith Hutton. He lives out near Oatman in a trailer. Works part time as an odd jobs man, roofing and such like. Also does some repaving for private and state folks. Works as little as he can, as far as I can see. His trailer is falling apart and he drives an old banger of a pickup. We’ve cited him three times for broken taillights or expired insurance.”

“Does he have any other charges on his sheet?”

“What, haven’t you heard?” Police Chief Gregors sounded surprised.

“No.”

“It’s all over the media.”

“I don’t pay attention to the media when I’m on a case.”

The officer laughed. “Good girl! They never get anything right anyway. Doesn’t matter which channel you listen to, they all got an axe to grind and even when they don’t, they still make mistakes by accident instead of on purpose. Keith Hutton got charged for assaulting a woman with a knife a couple of years back.”

“What?” Alexa said this so loudly Stuart turned to look, almost missing the turn on the winding mountain road they were descending at seventy miles an hour.

“Bar fight. We get a lot of them around here. He got into an altercation with some fellow. At first it was just fists. Keith Hutton knocked the guy down. He’s a big guy and the other man must have been pretty drunk to think he could take him on. Well, the guy decided to even the odds. Picked up a beer bottle in each hand and charged Hutton. So Hutton draws a hunting knife he had on his belt. Self-defense, the way I see it. Just then the other man’s girlfriend, who is drunker than both of them put together, leaps on Hutton and tried to claw his eyes out. She gets cut and goes down. Not cut too badly, but she pressed charges.”

“Did he do time?”

“He claimed it was an accident, that he brought up his arm to protect his face and didn’t mean to cut her.
